English Heritage's Kirby Hall

From 1998 we were commissioned by English Heritage to attend their most prestigious event at Kirby Hall, "History in Action".

Displays at Kirby Hall were given by over 3000 of some of the best re-enactors in the United Kingdom and Europe. Time periods from Roman to World War II and more recently even the first gulf conflict were recreated in the main arenas and at groups campsites. We are honoured to have been involved with these events for over five years, which have now unfortunately ended.

Built of the local Weldon stone, Kirby Hall has a delightful mixture of architectural styles. Begun in 1570 by Sir Humphrey Stafford, it was completed by Sir Christopher Hatton, one of Elizabeth I's most talented courtiers. It is an outstanding example of an Elizabethan mansion, including two courtyards, long galleries and a Great Hall. By the end of the 17th century the Hall's wonderful gardens were renowned as amongst the finest in England.

Now home to peacocks, the gardens are being restored, and topiary was introduced to the parterre in 1998.
