Lady Joan Erpyngham (-1404) (nee Clopton)
The last half of the fourteenth century saw the Cloptons migrate from their ancestral English environs of Wickhambrook, and began to imprint the indelible mark of the family upon the history of East Anglia. It was a thrilling time as countries locked in battle for control of England; kings were murdered and deposed, armies marched and old noble names were ruined while rising dynasties seized power and lands.
Lady Joan Clopton was Sir Thomas's first wife they were married some time before 1398, she was the daughter of Sir William Clopton of Clopton Suffolk and sister to Sir Walter Clopton.
Lady Joan Clopton died in 1404 and is buried along with Sir Thomas Erpyngham's second wife Joan Walton in his tomb at Norwich Cathedral.
